Summer is around the corner! Don't let the heat hinder your summer gardening activities!
An expected increase in temperature will be felt by our gardens and to help your plants survive the harsh effects of this dry season, good preparation will be important.
Be aware that different regions in the country experience varying levels of heat. But overall, summer brings challenges in keeping our gardens thriving.
Keep Potted Plants Cool
Potted plants are vulnerable to overheating. If they are being kept outside, make sure to move them away from the sun when the heat is at its peak. Shades would be a great help. Sometimes, the intense summer heat might be too much for the hardiest plants that require full sunlight.
You can also occasionally put some water on the saucers of each potted plant to ensure that plants are well-hydrated. Just don't add too much and change the water regularly to avoid mosquitos.
Keep Your Plants Hydrated
As the sun's rays dry out the soil faster, watering should also be done regularly. Make it a habit to check if your plants are getting the water it needs. If your plants are on pots or planters, make sure that drainages work fine. You want your plants to get enough but you also don’t want them to drown from overwatering. Overwatering can cause plant roots to rot.
Protect Newly Plants and Budding Plants
Some newly planted plants cannot sustain the heat of the sun. Add some protections for about 2 to 3 weeks so they can adjust without any harm. Similar to newly planted plants, budding plants can become dry and die from the summer heat. Make sure that they are properly mulched and watered.
Work on Cool Times
This one's for you! Try your best to work during cooler times of the day. If too much sunlight can affect plants, what more to humans. If possible, apply sunblock and drink a lot of water.
Wearing additional protective clothing would also be great like garden hats, umbrellas, and garden sleeves.
